Motivate … Lose Weight … Stay in Shape … And Feel Great!

The post-weight-loss surgery workout: 5 tips for staying motivated

The decision to undergo weight loss surgery includes a mental commitment to change one’s lifestyle. This means healthier eating habits, frequent blood work monitoring, and actively participating in … well … action. One of the wonderful things about a more active lifestyle is that the more one engages in working out, the more one’s body will crave the activity. So, how does one stay motivated to get to this feel-good-about-working-out stage?

One’s Comfort Zone
To know oneself is quite possibly half (or more) of the battle. Some feel comfortable exercising in a structured public environment like the gym, possibly with a personal trainer. Others feel better working out in the privacy of one’s own home with workout videos. Still others enjoy the great outdoors. In nice weather (or even inclement weather), some people jog, walk, or row to stay on track with personal fitness and weight loss goals. The important thing is to find an activity inside your comfort zone.

As the Body Changes, Comfort Zones Change
As one’s body (and mind) continues to change post-weight-loss surgery, and to stay motivated to continue working out, one may find a change in exercise scenery to be beneficial. Moving from the indoors to the outdoors or moving from aerobic to weightlifting routines on alternate days or weeks can sufficiently change up an exercise routine to keep one physically and mentally stimulated. This further optimizes physical and mental benefits while working out.

Buddy Support = Body (and Mind) Support
Buddies hold each other accountable. Buddies celebrate the accomplishments and keep each other on track. Buddies never eat away their feelings if a pound or two is gained or if an exercise session is missed. Buddies support each other in their body support. Buddies do not necessarily have to work out together; someone can simply check in on the other person to ensure adherence to a routine. For some, a personal trainer acts as a buddy. Buddies help keep positive lifestyle changes flowing in the right direction.

Schedule the Schedule
First, one must plan ahead. Second, one must keep a log. Planning helps with blocking out time each week to commit to working out. This is how one launches a routine and stays motivated to continue with that routine. Logging what one has done and journaling about the positive feelings can help one stay motivated when one goes back to read and reminisce about the experiences.

What Really Matters
What really matters in working out is not only how one looks. What really matters is supporting a healthier lifestyle. One attains better heart health, better sleep, more self-confidence, more energy, less stress, and many other benefits. One should not stop working out because one does not see a change in the physical right away.
