Symptoms of Rapid Weight Loss
There are many people for whom weight loss is a goal for this New Year and for those who have struggled for some time with their weight, choosing to undergo weight loss surgery is the way that they will tackle their weight once and for all. This typically comes after many years of tried and failed diets, and ultimately a host of obesity-related medical conditions that makes surgery a safe bet.
Following surgery, if all goes well and the patient follows instructions, weight will begin to come off and in many cases come off very quickly. When you consider how many calories were being consumed on a daily basis compared to the number of daily calories being consumed following surgery, it makes sense that weight should fly off so fast. This a good thing - a great thing - for someone who has made this amazing commitment and been brave enough to undergo a procedure that will change their life. But what may not be expected are some of the symptoms that can be associated with rapid weight loss - symptoms that can catch you off guard and may even be uncomfortable and irritating to manage. Here are some of the symptoms that you may experience as a result of rapid weight loss:
Hair thinning and hair loss. Quick weight loss can deplete protein and iron reserves in the body. The drastic reduction in vitamins and nutrients can be a shock to the body and result in the thinning and/or loss of hair.
Dry skin, acne, and other skin conditions. Changes to the skin are not at all uncommon and are generally the result of a reduction in protein as well as inadequate hydration.
Changes in mood. Rapid weight loss can impact hormone levels which, in turn, can result in mood changes. There is, of course, also the emotional part of having weight loss surgery - and the lifestyle that must be adopted after - so patients should not be surprised to experience a variety of emotions following surgery.
Temperature changes. Decreased body weight - especially so rapidly - will often result in patients feeling very cold.
Flu-like symptoms. Some patients report feeling very tired and even achy following weight loss surgery. This is normal and will resolve itself over time as strength is regained.
If you are struggling with any symptoms and they are interfering with your life, it’s important to talk with your doctor about what you may be able to do to help. The good news is that these symptoms very often go away as you adjust to your new lifestyle and before you know it you’ll only be enjoying the positive results of this amazing journey.
